How to Measure Your Windows
Getting the right measurement takes just a few minutes. Choose your mount type below.
- Measure width at top, middle, and bottom — use the smallest number
- Measure height on left, center, and right — use the largest number
- We automatically deduct 1/4" from width for a perfect fit
- Add 2–3" beyond each side of the frame for full coverage
- Mount bracket 2–4" above the frame to make windows appear taller
- Measure from bracket top down to your desired drop point

Common Questions
Do I need to deduct anything from my measurements?
No. Enter your exact measurements as taken. For inside mount, we automatically deduct 1/4" from the width to ensure a proper fit. For outside mount, what you enter is exactly what you get. See our measuring guide for full details.
What if my window isn't perfectly square?
Most windows are slightly out of square — this is normal. Always measure at three points and use the smallest width measurement. This ensures the shade will fit even if the frame is narrower at one point.
How long does production take?
Most orders ship within 5–7 business days. Motorized and roman shades may take up to 7–10 days. You will receive a tracking number by email as soon as your order ships.
Is shipping really free?
Yes — free shipping on every shade order within the contiguous US, no minimum. Fabric sample orders are shipped separately and do require a small shipping fee to cover handling.
What's the difference between inside and outside mount?
Inside mount fits the shade within the window frame — clean, recessed look. Requires at least 1.5" of frame depth. Outside mount attaches to the wall above the frame — better for light blockage and windows with shallow frames.
How do I know if a fabric is truly blackout?
Our product listings clearly label fabrics as Light-Filtering, Room-Darkening, or Blackout. Blackout fabrics block 99%+ of light. We recommend ordering a fabric sample to see the opacity in your specific room before ordering.
How difficult is the installation?
Most customers install their first shade in under 15 minutes. You need a pencil, level, and a drill or manual screwdriver. See our full installation guide.
Can I cancel or change my order?
Because every shade is custom-made, we begin production immediately after your order is placed. Changes or cancellations are only possible within 24 hours of ordering. Contact us as soon as possible at support@coolwindshades.com.
What if my shade doesn't fit?
If the shade was made incorrectly relative to the dimensions you submitted, we will remake it at no cost. If the issue was an error in your measurements, we offer a one-time remake at a discounted rate. Contact us and we will sort it out.
What does the 2-year warranty cover?
Our warranty covers manufacturing defects including roll mechanism issues, bracket failures, fabric delamination, and motor failures for motorized shades. Contact us with your order number and photos to start a claim.
